Introduction to Knitting (Overview)

This course is going to teach you to knit – by making a hat. A nice woolly hat, knit in the round, to keep you warm this coming year. The tutorials are primarily aimed at those who are new to knitting – we’ll be covering all the basics, like how to cast on, how to make knit and purl stitches, how to knit in the round, how to decrease your stitches at the top of the hat, how to finish your hat. I’ll also talk about the different materials you might encounter while knitting, and some information on how to read patterns (and where to get them). If you’ve knit before and would like guidance with anything, or suggestions for patterns/new skills, please just comment or message – I’m very happy to chat to you about that! But even if you’re an accomplished knitter taking the time to make a hat for yourself is a nice thing to do.

The course is made up of 4 tutorials:

  1. Materials and Casting On
  2. Knitting, Purling, and Making the Brim
  3. The Body
  4. Decreasing and Finishing

The tutorials will teach you all you need to know to make your hat, but if you’d like a bit more guidance I can heartily recommend this book: You Will Be Able to Knit By the End of This Book by Rosie Fletcher. Another good ‘beginner’ book is Bold Beginner Knits by Kate Davies.
